**Classroom Behavior Specialist**

**Description**

**Job Purpose or Objective(s):** Support student acquisition of classroom engagement and program standards identified by the Office of Head Start & Program Policies & Procedures. Responsible for observing, assessing, and provide support to adults and children who have emotional or behavior issues to helps those with disabilities or problems that impair learning or social functions be successful in learning environments.

**Primary Tasks:**

1. Assist staff in defining and measuring behavior; understanding principles of reinforcement; teaching new behavior; implementing strategies for weakening behavior; and identifying antecedents.

2. Work with individual teachers, groups of teachers and/or the entire staff on issues such as: crisis intervention, learning and collaboration issues, and factors that can affect development and implementation of interventions.

3. Promote highly specialized positive behavior interventions to staff and parents in which "at risk" students thrive and provide behavior instruction that is explicit, intensive, accelerated and provides ample practice.

4. Participate in meetings to develop IFSPs and/or assist in classroom integration plans.

5. Use ongoing assessments to maintain a record of student progress

6. Develop a range of assessment strategies consistent with instructional goals, teaching methods, and individual student needs to more accurately assess student behavior skills and understandings.

7. Engage parents in the "student behavior intervention plan" process and empower parents by providing them with skills and techniques to support the positive behavior development of their child.

8. Conduct conflict resolution and behavior modification training and support.

9. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

**Required Education, Skills and Experience:**

MINIMUM

+ Associates degree in Education or early childhood education, social work, human services, psychology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

+ Understanding of the Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start child development outcomes.

+ Knowledge and application of Developmentally Appropriate Practices

+ Strong communication skills

+ Effective interpersonal skills, multitasking ability, and time management skills

+ Basic computer skills

+ Knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies.

+ Knowledge of techniques for Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function -based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)

+ Two years early childhood classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of "at risk" and/or "behaviorally challenged" students.

TARGET

+ Bachelor's in Education or early childhood education, social work, human services, psychology, or related field

+ Understanding and experience of the Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start child development outcomes.

+ Thorough knowledge and application of Developmentally Appropriate Practices

+ Strong communication skills and ability to communicate to people at all levels.

+ Strong effective interpersonal skills, efficient in multitasking, and time management skills

+ Intermediate computer skills

+ Knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies.

+ Experience with techniques for Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function -based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)

+ Five years early childhood classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of "at risk" and/or "behaviorally challenged" students.
