Job Purpose or Objective(s): Ensures Choctaw Nation is in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and provides the broader Choctaw Nation Reservation community with technical expertise and documentation assistance relating to historic structures.

This position starts at $54,952 annually.

Primary Tasks
Develop and implement a strategic plan for documenting Choctaw historic structures, both on and off the reservation, which integrates with the Choctaw Register of Historic Places.
Develop resource management recommendations and work with team members to develop interpretive plans for the historic structures owned by Choctaw Nation
Conduct NHPA review for Choctaw Nation projects and 3rd party undertakings that involve historic structures across the Choctaw Nation's 9-state Area of Historic Interest.
Monitor site activity for potential unanticipated adverse effects to historic resources.
Work with community members and Historic Preservation Department staff to document the stories connected with Choctaw historic structures.
Serve as Choctaw Nation's contact point for certifying local governments, historic districts, and historic homes, and making community members aware of federal tax credits
Perform technical writing, which may include preparation of National Register nominations, Determinations of Eligibility, condition assessment reports, Historic Structure Reports, Building Preservation Plans, historic specifications, and community publications.
Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Required Education, Skills And Experience

MINIMUM
Graduate degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field; or a bachelor's degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field plus two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching; or substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history
Meets the Secretary of Interior's standards for an Architectural Historian
Experience in Autocad (or equivalent) and ArcGIS
Knowledge and understanding of the NHPA and section 106 regulations
Knowledge of historic period vernacular architectural styles and methods of construction in the Southeast

TARGET
Graduate degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or closely related field
Experience in Autocad (or equivalent) and ArcGIS
Knowledge and understanding of the NHPA and section 106 regulations
Knowledge of historic period vernacular architectural styles and methods of construction in the Southeast
Familiarity with relevant National Park Service (NPS) publications and tax laws
Experience in writing historic structure reports, Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) surveys, and National Register nominations
Specific knowledge of Choctaw history and culture
1 year experience in working with Tribal communities
